Coltharp Piano World
About Us
Coltharp Piano World has proudly served the Mid-South with new and pre-owned pianos for more than four decades. In 2025, my husband and business partner, Russell Coltharp, passed away after a lifetime devoted to music, craftsmanship, and the joy that fine instruments bring to people’s lives.
For over twenty years, I, Karin Coltharp, had the privilege of working alongside Russell as we built Coltharp Piano World together. Russell’s career in piano tuning, service, and restoration spanned nearly fifty years, beginning in the 1970s, and our work took us into homes, churches, and concert venues throughout Memphis and the surrounding community.
Russell’s passing earlier this year is deeply felt by our family and by the many clients and friends he served. In his honor, we are holding a liquidation sale of our entire piano collection—a carefully curated inventory that reflects decades of expertise, care, and dedication invested into each instrument.
At this time, we are offering all remaining pianos in our inventory, including uprights, grands, rebuilt instruments, and quality used pianos. Our main showroom alone contains more than 100 pianos, each ready to bring music and memories to a new home. Below, you will find a detailed listing of the instruments available.

Concert grand pianos represent the highest standard of piano craftsmanship and are designed for professional concert pianists and the most demanding musical performances. These instruments typically measure above 7foot in length, with a large soundboard and extended bass strings that provide unmatched power, clarity, and resonance. The key action is finely balanced to allow for exceptional responsiveness and tonal nuance across the entire keyboard. Concert grands deliver an enormous dynamic range and sustained richness, making them the preferred choice for large concert halls and performance venues where every nuance must be clearly projected. Their size, build quality, and acoustic excellence allow musicians to fully express the depth and complexity of a wide repertoire, from delicate classical pieces to powerful modern compositions.
Grand pianos are elegant instruments favored by serious musicians, advanced students, and professionals seeking superior sound quality and expressive control. Their horizontal string layout and larger soundboards allow for richer and fuller tones with a wider dynamic range than upright pianos. The more responsive action mechanics, aided by gravity, enable faster note repetition and nuanced touch, making them ideal for recital halls, studios, and homes with adequate space. Sizes range from smaller baby grands (around 5 feet) perfect for more intimate spaces, to full concert grands exceeding 9 feet, renowned for their powerful sound projection and refined expression. Grand pianos deliver an unmatched playing experience for those who demand excellence in tonal richness and performance responsiveness.
Upright pianos are designed for a wide range of players, from beginners to advanced amateurs, who need a space-efficient instrument with good tonal quality. Their manageable size makes them perfect for homes, schools, and smaller venues, offering reliable performance at an affordable level, and they are well-suited for practice and casual playing.
Clearance pianos are available as preowned and/or rebuilt instruments, each offered in as-is condition and selected to provide players and families with access to quality acoustic pianos at a more accessible price point; whether the pianos have been carefully restored or are standard used models, every instrument displays its own unique history, character, and sound, and while some show normal signs of cosmetic wear, all are inspected and prepared for functional use, making them ideal for anyone seeking the distinct warmth, craftsmanship, and enduring value found in older instruments without committing to the cost of a new piano or requiring showroom perfection.
